Plaque vs tartar: what's the difference?

One you can remove yourself, in about a minute. The other has been set hard by minerals from your own saliva, and nothing you own will move it.

These two words get used interchangeably, and the difference is the single most practical distinction in day-to-day oral care. One is a problem you solve tonight. The other is a problem only an instrument solves — and it forms out of the first one faster than most people expect.

Plaque

Plaque is a biofilm: a soft, organised community of bacteria stuck to your teeth in a self-produced matrix. It begins forming on a perfectly clean tooth within hours. Everyone has it, continuously, and that is normal rather than a failure.

It is soft. It requires no force to remove — only contact and thoroughness, which is why a soft brush used carefully outperforms a hard brush used aggressively. You can feel it as the fuzzy film on your teeth before brushing.

Tartar (calculus)

Leave plaque undisturbed and something specific happens: calcium and phosphate dissolved in your saliva — the same minerals that repair your enamel — precipitate into it and set it hard. Within roughly 24 to 72 hours, soft biofilm becomes tartar, also called calculus, bonded firmly to the tooth.

At that point brushing does nothing. Neither does flossing, oil pulling, charcoal, or any rinse. Tartar is removed by a dentist or hygienist with an instrument, and that is the entire list of options. This is what professional cleaning exists for.

Why tartar makes everything worse

It is not merely hardened plaque sitting there inertly. Tartar is rough and porous, which makes it an excellent surface for new plaque to attach to — and it holds that new plaque tight against the gum margin, exactly where it does damage.

So the process accelerates. Tartar collects plaque, that plaque mineralises, the deposit grows, and the gum inflames against it. This is the engine behind gum disease, and it is why the interval between cleanings matters more than people assume.

Where it appears first, and why

Tartar does not form evenly. It shows up first on the inside of the lower front teeth and the outside of the upper back molars — because those two spots sit directly in front of major salivary gland openings.

More saliva means more available minerals, so plaque hardens there fastest. If you run your tongue behind your lower front teeth and feel roughness, that is what it is. It also means those two areas repay the most attention when you brush.

What this means for your routine

  • You have roughly a day to work with. Plaque removed within 24 hours never gets the chance to mineralise. That is the entire argument for daily cleaning stated as a deadline.
  • Between the teeth matters most, because that is where a brush cannot reach and where deposits sit undisturbed longest. See how often you should floss.
  • Gentle and thorough beats hard and fast. Pressure does not help against something soft, and it does harm to gums.
  • “Tartar control” toothpaste slows formation, it does not remove tartar. Once it is there, the label cannot help you.
  • Keep your cleaning appointments. If tartar is already present, home care maintains the situation rather than reversing it.

Do not try to scrape it off yourself

Dental scalers are sold online, and using one without training is a genuinely bad idea. It is easy to gouge the enamel, damage the gum, or push debris beneath the gum margin where it causes more harm than it did on the surface — while leaving the deposits below the gumline, which are the ones that actually matter. This is a case where the professional version is not merely better, it is different.
